Who We Are
FISH Living is beyond coliving housing - it's a coliving experience. We started our community in 2008 and are proud to pioneer the first coliving housing in the Los Angeles area. We believe in developing communal house sharing from the ground up. It’s both humbling and validating to see other coliving housing projects follow in our footsteps. Think of our housing as a collective community, a Kibbutz, with a high degree of social cohesion and teamwork. In such a community, everyone shares responsibilities and resources together. Our unique house is built to encourage community, foster friendship, and develop networking opportunities.
With fully furnished private bedrooms, we offer a healthy balance between privacy and socializing. While you have private space, you can always socialize in the common areas. FISH Living hosts a diverse community of digital nomads, students in college and beyond, young professionals, medical professionals, and others. In addition, we are known for being inclusive and encompassing of all cultures and backgrounds. The multitude of international dishes cooked in our restaurant-style kitchen is a testament to the uniqueness of our home.
Over the years, many relationships have blossomed between our walls, often into life-long friendships. This is where we count our real successes. |

How We're Different
We value quality of life and living space. That means:
• An actual room with an actual bed and furniture that is for you (and only you) to use.
• We do not offer a “Pod”, a “Wooden box”, a “Human Drawer”, or pile you in like a pack of sardines in bunk beds. Your housemates are in the rooms next to yours, not in a “Wooden box" (sorry “Pod”) above, below, or next to you.
• Our housing is in actual houses - really large houses - not converted apartments or commercial buildings. It’s a real house that provides you with a real sense of home like no other.

Why "Coliving"
? Seriously, why be a part of coliving? Aha, for many reasons!
For the individual benefits, living in a coliving community provides many advantages as compared to traditional living options. While the benefits are many, the most common benefits include community, convenience, cost savings, and comfort. |
|
1. Community
The vast majority of coliving companies around the world claim that community is the number one benefit they provide their residents. Coliving promises their residents a thoughtful, community driven living experience that will lead to meaningful relationships. One of the trends that has increased the demand for community is the loneliness epidemic that has been identified by researchers in countries around the world. Studies have shown that “loneliness is just as lethal as smoking 15 cigarettes per day” and “lonely people are 50% more likely to die prematurely than those with healthy social relationships.”
Studies show that daily social interactions, such as those common in coliving communities, can actually “improve health and increase longevity.” Early evidence from coliving operators highlights the benefit of community. Venn, an Israeli coliving operator with locations in Israel, Germany, and the US, found that “loneliness levels drop by 50% just 6 months after joining Venn” and “100% of members feel they are socially supported.”
2. Convenience The convenience benefit of coliving comes namely from flexible lease terms and a tenant-centric model. Instead of only offering twelve month leases, we also offer shorter lease terms of three or six months that better suit the dynamic lifestyles of tenants. As a differentiation strategy, we also aim to remove the many frictions of the traditional living experience such as buying and moving furniture, finding roommates, or paying separate utility bills. By providing fully furnished rooms, and including utilities at a single rent price, we create a convenient living experience “so all you need to do upon arrival is unpack your suitcase.”
3. Cost Savings Another potential benefit of coliving is relatively affordable rent when compared to traditional living environments in the same area. We decrease costs for our residents in two main ways. First we bundle our product offering to include a variety of services for one, all-inclusive price. Instead of paying separate bills for utilities, furniture, wifi, cleaning services, and amenities (such as bed sheets, kitchen towels, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, dish soap, hand soap, etc.) coliving residents pay one bill each month that comes at a discount compared to paying for all the services individually. We utilize higher density spatial design models to decrease the amount of rent paid by each resident.
4. Cost Conscious The cost conscious category of coliving is oriented towards cost conscious residents that are oftentimes priced out of large cities. With home prices outpacing wage growth in 80% of U.S. markets, an increasing number of people are looking for affordable living options within large urban areas. We have seized the opportunity to provide a relatively more affordable living experience centered around community. Due to the increase in density, potential residents can expect to pay far less than renting a studio in the same city.
5. Philosophically
An aspect of intentional communities that is found, especially in smaller independent coliving spaces, is that of shared values, interests, or purpose in life amongst its residents. Our homes often curate our residents to match these values, so that strong bonds and affinities are built which works to resolve the social isolation often found in entirely independent housing units.
6. Impact Coliving has grown in popularity in cities such as New York City and London. A Bloomberg article cited "adult dorms" such as coliving facilities as one of the "eight social trends told us about America's economy in 2018.”
Author Alexandria Lafci speculated in 2018 that coliving could become ubiquitous in the same way coworking is. She cited both the expectation of 2.5 billion people living in cities by 2050 and 90% of people living on 10% of our land's surface. Hotelier Ian Schragerclaimed that coliving spaces were "blurring the distinction between residential and hotels" due in part to differing sensibilities between millennials and previous generations. Author Polly Chu proposed coliving as a potential solution for Hong Kong's housing issues. She said that it could both be done with cross-generational housing – ie, retrofitting a retirement home to accommodate younger people living with elderly family members – or standard housemates. Author Matthew Stewart was critical of a specific coliving corporation for "the price, exclusivity, and substandard size of bedrooms and cynical view of community." He was also critical of the idea of coliving as a new idea, when he claims that it is a modern, commodified take on a form of living that had a "radical social intent.” |

Would you be a good Coliving guest? Read the story below and you decide :-)
This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody
.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done. The moral of the story is for you to be somebody that everybody loves, anyone would respect and nobody will forget! :-) |
